Just when we thought we had covered all the beer and burger places in Encinitas, we yet find another one. A little further south down the Pacific Coast HWY 101 and it popped out. The Lumberyard Tavern. Pretty good sized place with lots of seating. It was a nice day and so we opted for the little decked patio they had out front. There are plenty of big screen tv around the place to catch a game on.
There many things to choose from on the menu, however, we first judge a place by it’s burgers and then by it’s beers. Unfortunately not a huge selection of IPAs, but a wide spectrum of craft beers. They had a Stone Stochasticity Project Grapefruit Slam, but in my beer snobbishness I have decided to stay away from citrus blends. So I opted for the Avery IPA from Avery Brewing in Boulder Colorado. It was refreshing and mild for an IPA. Great for a sunny day.
I ordered the Border Burger which was made with chipotle aioli, pepperjack cheese, jalapenos, lettuce, tomato, onion on a pretzel bun with fries. I can’t say that I am the type of guy who goes for the hottest thing, but I have no fear of jalapenos on a burger. It’s a fantastic taste and they don’t burn like you would expect them to. However, I could have done without the raw onions. My wife and I usually like our burgers with grilled onion.
