While Temecula is more known as wine country to most, it is fast becoming known as beer country too. So just because there are a lot of winos swinging around old town doesn’t mean you can’t find a decent beer and burger joint.
In fact there are many and today we stopped in at Blackbird Tavern. This is a fun place. The decor is rustic barn wood and crates with ceiling lamps made with old milk canisters. There are antiques strewn about which matches the flavor of old town Temecula to a T.
The place is huge, but the menu is small. That’s OK what they do have is executed by a top chef that hand-cuts fries, roasted beet salad, hand made pasta, fresh local produce and an awesome burger. Fits our bill. Even the tap selection is small but they managed to have something for everyone. The only IPA they had was from Moylans Brewery in Navato California. That’s right above San Francisco. It was tasty. I my try to get some more if BevMo has it.
My wife and I both ordered the Blackbird burger. She opted for the side salad and I of course fries. Well, mine came with the salad instead of the fries, but I am glad it did. I really didn’t need fries and the salad was really good. The salad in this case was a great complement to the burger which I must say has to be one of the best I have ever had. 8oz of natural certified angus ground chuck with a thick cut of bacon, gouda cheese, arugula and tomato chutney on a toasted brioche bun. Served with house pickles. A bit pricey, but very worth it.
