When you are going north on the I-39 you have to pull off for lunch at Stevens Point. It is a small town famous for it’s local Point Brewery. Not far from the exit you will find a happening place called Hilltop.
This place has been around since the 1940’s. It has since been emodeled, but they do sport a tail on their menu about a bus that crashed into the restaurant in 1953. Point Brewery is well represented here with a great tap selection (6 taps out of 23) and old neon signs.
The ambiance is very Wisconsin. Thick wood furniture and beer signs everywhere. Yet very comfortable. You walk through a huge barrel upon entering so you know it’s cool.
Their signature burger is the Guinness burger which I ordered well with waffle fries. They infused Guinness beer into a cheese sauce that is poured over the burger. It’s a half pounder, not a problem because I was hungry. This burger also comes with a pretzel bun. Other side choices were cole slaw fruit or potato salad.
I didn’t have time for two beers so I only ordered one. It was the Whole Hog 6-Hop I.P.A. from Point Brewery. This one has won Gold for the past three years and I can see why it is delicious. IBUS 87, but really not that bitter and finishes excellently.
The University is down the street too, so there are always cute waitresses on staff.
